El halcón
Jude Nutter
Justicia y piedad
Son sueños humanos

— Robinson Jeffers

El halcón se mantuvo inmóvil. A la vista.
Adentro, el viento. Me detuve, parada en el filo
de un territorio, sobre una empinada
pendiente de grava y matorrales.
El agua debajo y lejos. Escuchaba
me sorprendió.

The Falcon
Jude Nutter

Justice and mercy
Are human dreams…
– Robinson Jeffers

The falcon held motionless. At eye level.
Inside the wind. I stood at the edge
of a continent above a steep slope of gravel and scrub.
The water below and beyond. I heard
the level, bright tracks the wind followed in, steadily,
from the north. The keenings of its many mouths
across the bare rocks of the headland.
After it collapsed its wings and vanished
into the scrub, that bird then rode the wind
right back up to where it had been.
As if a shelf had been worn in the air
by its purpose. In its claws, a compact darkness,
a tail like a loose thread – a little body
at the apex of its terror. Then a sudden, brilliant
explosion of blood.
Which held in the air for the briefest moment.
Which was torn away in the wind. A pink mist.
Then nothing. The beauty
of it caught me by surprise. And what was left.
Against the constant shoveling of the wind
a slim bird, hanging. Its solitude and indifference.
The wind panicking in the hood of my jacket.
Around the rocks, collars of surf like spun glass.
The mind searching for the comfort
of metaphor. But why make it something
less than it was: a body,
emptied out, then a tiny heart clamping hard
around nothing.
